December 29, 2008 2:00 am Special teams have a way of making the biggest differences in games. Except for kicker Mike Salerno, special teams have been a thorn in the side for the Northern Illinois Huskies this season. NIU, which was playing in its first bowl game since 2006, played good enough defense and offense to stay in the game. Trailing 14-7 halfway through the fourth quarter, the Huskies Mike Sobol nearly intercepted a Ross Jenkins pass. Two plays later, Tech fumbled the ball away giving NIUs offense another chance. NIU allowed a 97-yard kickoff return by Louisiana Techs Phillip Livas in the first quarter. Penalties also hindered NIU.

All Nate Palmer did in his Huskies debut was pile up 170 yards on three catches, including touchdowns of 91 and 52 yards in the second half, against Big Ten member Minnesota. 13.    Five Huskies Named to Academic All-MAC Team

- A school-record five members of the Huskie football team were named to the Mid-American Conference's 2008 Academic All-MAC squad as selected the league's faculty athletics representatives, Northern Illinois announced Monday. NIU had the second-highest number of players selected to the 31-member team behind only Central Michigan's seven honorees. Brost, a senior electrical engineering major with a 3.6 grade point average who is also a four-year starter at right tackle, was selected to the Academic All-MAC list for the third consecutive season. He became the first Huskie to achieve that distinction since the league moved from an "Honor Roll" listing to a team that is selected and voted on by the FARs beginning in 2002. The senior has caught 90 passes for 1,616 yards during his NIU career and ranked third on the team with 18 catches for 333 yards in 2008. Krause, a sophomore who started every game at nose guard for NIU in 2008 and compiled 32 tackles and four tackles for loss, owns a 3.44 GPA in business management, while Rusch is an electrical engineering major with a 3.33 grade point average. The Huskies will take on Louisiana Tech in the 2008 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, La.
